Bengaluru Hospital Launches Third Phase Of Covaxin Trials
Chief minister BS Yediyurappa launched the third and crucial phase of trials for Covaxin, a Covid-19 vaccine candidate, developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech, during a virtual ceremony on Wednesday. The first two phases of human trials, also tested in Belagavi and Mysuru besides several other places across the country, were successfully completed. The final phase, which will be conducted across 25 locations in 12 states, is expected to be completed in the next two months.“Covaxin trials are going to be a success and Karnataka is fully prepared to distribute it to the masses,” said health and medical education minister K Sudhakar soon after the launch at the privately-run Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Bengaluru. K Ravi Babu, an official at Vydehi, said Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has permitted the hospital to conduct the third phase of trial and the hospital has roped in Clintrac International, which will involve about 1,500-1800 volunteers.“The vaccine will be given to volunteers in two doses, the first on Wednesday. The second dose will be administered on December 30,” said Babu.Though volunteers need not stay in the hospital, Babu said they would be monitored daily through phone/video call for feedback and updates. “Volunteers will be a mixture of men and women above 18 years of age. As the vaccine candidate is preventive and curative, it will be given to those who test negative. All vaccinations could have side effects, but experts will continuously monitor volunteers,” said Babu.Sudhakar was confident one or another of the several vaccines being trialled around the world will be ready for use in the next few months and claimed the state was ready with 29,451 distribution centres and 10,008 trained staff, besides 2,855 cold storage centres. He said regional centres are being set up in Bengaluru, Shivamogga and Ballari. Healthcare workers will be the first to be vaccinated, followed by frontline warriors and then people aged above 50 years and people with comorbidities.
