Gujarat FDCA approves layout designs of 240 drug manufacturing units post GST

The Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) has approved layout designs of a total of 240 pharmaceutical companies since July 2015 after the introduction of goods and services tax (GST). The manufacturing units which are likely to start operations soon include APIs, formulations and medical device units. Some of the major companies to start operations are Supharmachem Group Lab Bharuch, Stallion Laboratories Pvt. Ltd, Ahmedabad Rural, Gladious Products Pvt.Ltd, Gandhinagar, Exotic Pharma, Godhara, Aashka Formulation Pvt.Ltd, Gandhinagar, Akshar Air Gases, Surat, Swan Medicot Morbid, Fishfa Biogenics, Rajkot, Chevron Pharma, Bharuch, Alidac Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Ahmedabad Rural, Madilyn Healthcare, Ahmedabad Rural, M J Healthcare, Mehsana, Labron Healthcare Pvt. Ltd, Mehsana, Trio Lifescience Pvt.Ltd, Ahmedabad city, Het Medicare Pvt.Ltd, Himatnagar and Cytokine Pharmaceuticals, Ahmedabad City among others. Other companies which are likely to start operations are Punishka Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Edkem Pharmaceuticals, Avantika Medex Pvt Ltd, Derek Healthcare, Dewcare Concept Pvt Ltd, Afeel Life Care, Rajkot and Moksh Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd, Vadodara. MNCs like Abbott, Israel based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, Japanese company Otsuka Pharmaceutical Company Ltd and Baxter are also likely to set up facilities. In the current scenario, it is also easier and timely for the pharma companies to start their operations smoothly without much hiccups as Gujarat government has revised its time line for grant of manufacturing licenses to 60 days from the earlier stipulated time line of 120 days. Revision of timeliness for grant of manufacturing licenses has been a major initiative of the government as part of Pharma Vision 2020 under the Right of Citizens to Services for speedy issuance of licenses. Gujarat government is also awaiting a favourable policy on bulk drugs and medical devices as the Centre is mulling over to frame an exclusive policy on the same. A large number of pharmaceutical companies which had to shut down their production facilities in the northern part of the country in the event of expiry of tax holidays granted during 2001-02 have also got approvals for their plant layout designs which is a major boost to the domestic pharmaceutical industry.
