Ipsen Completes Acquisition of Memo Therapeutics to Advance BK Polyomavirus Treatment

Deal brings potravitug into Ipsen's portfolio as company targets unmet need in kidney transplant care

Ipsen has completed its acquisition of Memo Therapeutics AG, a late-stage biotechnology company developing potravitug, an investigational monoclonal antibody designed to target BK polyomavirus in kidney transplant recipients.

The acquisition gives Ipsen control of potravitug, which is being developed as a potential first-in-class treatment for BK polyomavirus reactivation.

The deal also adds a late-stage program to Ipsen's pipeline as the company expands its focus on serious diseases where patients have limited treatment options.

Potravitug Targets BK Polyomavirus Reactivation

Potravitug is a monoclonal antibody designed to target BK polyomavirus, commonly called BKPyV.

The virus is very common. Most people are exposed to it during childhood, and it usually stays inactive in the body without causing major problems.

The situation can change when a person's immune system is weakened.

This is particularly important for kidney transplant recipients. These patients take medicines that suppress the immune system to prevent their bodies from rejecting the transplanted kidney.

When the immune system is suppressed, BKPyV can become active again and start multiplying.

In some patients, this can lead to BK polyomavirus-associated nephropathy, or BKVAN, which can damage the transplanted kidney.

BKPyV Is a Major Concern After Kidney Transplantation

Around 90% of kidney transplant recipients are positive for the BKPyV serotype.

During the first year after transplantation, high levels of BKPyV in the blood are seen in around 30% of patients, indicating that the virus has reactivated.

For some patients, the infection can become a serious problem.

BKPyV reactivation and BKVAN can increase the risk of losing the transplanted kidney. Patients may eventually require dialysis or another transplant.

At present, there are no approved targeted therapies specifically designed to treat BKPyV.

Doctors generally manage the problem by reducing immunosuppressive medicines. The challenge is that these medicines are also needed to protect the transplanted kidney from rejection.

This creates a difficult balance between controlling the virus and protecting the transplant.

Phase II Data Support Potravitug Development

The development of potravitug is supported by data from the Phase II SAFE KIDNEY II trial.

The study is described as the largest placebo-controlled trial conducted in kidney transplant recipients with BKPyV.

Clinical trial results showed a significant antiviral response with potravitug, along with resolution of BKPyV-associated nephropathy in treated patients.

Additional analyses from the program have also been presented at major international kidney and transplant medical congresses.

Ipsen believes these findings support the continued development of potravitug and provide a basis for planning the next stages of clinical development.

A successful kidney transplant can give patients a chance to move away from long-term dialysis and improve their quality of life.

However, complications such as BKPyV reactivation can threaten the transplanted organ.
