Rani Therapeutics and PegBio Partner to Develop Oral Treatments for Obesity and Metabolic Diseases
Companies Team Up to Expand Oral Biologic Therapy Development
Rani Therapeutics Holdings, Inc. has announced a new research and development collaboration with PegBio Co., Ltd. to explore oral delivery options for several obesity and metabolic disease drug candidates.
The partnership will combine PegBio's pipeline of obesity therapies with Rani Therapeutics' proprietary RaniPill platform, which is designed to deliver biologic medicines through an oral capsule instead of injections.
The companies aim to identify the most promising candidates and move them toward clinical development.
Focus on Multiple Obesity Drug Candidates
Under the agreement, Rani Therapeutics and PegBio will work together during the preclinical stage to develop RaniPill formulations for several molecules from PegBio's obesity and metabolic disease portfolio.
The goal is to evaluate these candidates and select the strongest ones for future clinical studies.
By testing multiple molecules, both companies hope to increase the chances of developing new oral treatment options for obesity.
Rani Wants to Expand Its Obesity Pipeline
Rani Therapeutics says the collaboration is another step in its strategy to strengthen and diversify its obesity franchise.
Talat Imran, Chief Executive Officer of Rani Therapeutics, said the partnership reflects the company's confidence in the flexibility of the RaniPill platform.
He explained that working on multiple obesity drug candidates allows the company to explore different treatment approaches while giving patients more oral alternatives to injectable therapies.
He also noted that PegBio's pipeline fits well with areas where Rani sees significant unmet medical needs and strong future market opportunities.
PegBio Sees Value in Oral Drug Delivery
PegBio believes the RaniPill technology can help unlock the full potential of its drug candidates.
Michael Xu, Chief Executive Officer of PegBio, said the company looks forward to working closely with Rani Therapeutics to advance the development of its obesity and metabolic disease programs.
According to him, delivering biologic medicines orally could improve convenience for patients and support wider adoption of future therapies.
RaniPill Designed to Replace Injections
The RaniPill is a proprietary oral drug delivery platform developed by Rani Therapeutics.
The technology is designed to deliver biologic medicines through a capsule, reducing the need for traditional subcutaneous injections or intravenous infusions.
The company believes this approach could make treatment easier for patients who require long-term biologic therapies by offering a more convenient oral option.
Collaboration Builds on Existing Obesity Research
The new agreement adds to Rani Therapeutics' growing obesity development program.
One of the company's leading candidates is RT-114, a dual GLP-1 and GLP-2 receptor agonist being developed in partnership with ProGen.
RT-114 is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial.
Alongside this program, Rani has also completed several preclinical studies involving other obesity treatments, including semaglutide.
Preclinical Studies Show Encouraging Results
According to Rani Therapeutics, earlier preclinical research has produced encouraging findings.
Studies involving semaglutide and other obesity candidates demonstrated pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, pharmacodynamics, and weight-loss effects that were comparable to medicines delivered through subcutaneous injections.
These results support the company's belief that oral delivery using the RaniPill platform could become a practical alternative for biologic therapies that are traditionally administered by injection.
Expanding Oral Treatment Options for Patients
The collaboration reflects growing interest in developing obesity medicines that are easier for patients to use.
If successful, the partnership could help expand the number of biologic therapies available in oral form while supporting future innovation in obesity and metabolic disease treatment.
Both companies will now focus on advancing selected candidates through preclinical development before identifying those suitable for clinical trials.
