Lakewood-Amedex Presents Nu-3 Antimicrobial Data at IDWeek 2026

Lakewood-Amedex Biotherapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: LABT), a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing novel antimicrobials, announced the presentation of research on Nu-3, its lead clinical candidate, at IDWeek 2026, held October 21–24 in Washington, D.C.

The research highlights the broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity of Nu-3, a member of the company's proprietary Bisphosphocin® class, against resistant bacterial pathogens associated with infected diabetic foot ulcers (iDFUs).

Nu-3 Demonstrates Rapid Antibacterial Activity in Preclinical Testing

The poster presentation, titled “Nu-3 – A Novel, Broad Spectrum Antimicrobial Compound with High In-Vitro Activity Against Resistant Pathogens for the Treatment of Infected Diabetic Foot Ulcers,” presented findings on the compound's antimicrobial profile.

According to the company, the research demonstrated that Nu-3:

  • Exhibits broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative and multidrug-resistant bacteria.

  • Shows rapid bactericidal activity, with bacterial eradication occurring within minutes for the tested pathogens.

  • Demonstrates activity against biofilm organisms, which can contribute to persistent and difficult-to-treat infections.

  • Shows a favorable resistance profile in serial-passage testing, with only a slight increase in minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

In the same resistance testing, ciprofloxacin showed a 600- to 2,000-fold increase in MIC values, according to the company. These findings suggest that Nu-3 may have potential as an alternative approach to treating infections involving resistant bacteria. Further clinical evaluation will be needed to establish its safety and efficacy in patients.

Addressing Antimicrobial Resistance in Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Infected diabetic foot ulcers represent a significant treatment challenge, particularly when resistant bacterial pathogens are involved. The company noted that approximately half of diabetic foot ulcers become infected, while an estimated 15% to 25% involve resistant organisms, primarily methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Nu-3 is being developed as a topical treatment for mildly infected diabetic foot ulcers. Its reported activity against resistant bacteria and biofilms could be relevant to addressing the challenges associated with these infections.

Nu-3 Advances in an Ongoing Phase 2a Clinical Trial

Lakewood-Amedex is currently evaluating Nu-3 in an ongoing Phase 2a clinical trial involving patients with mildly infected diabetic foot ulcers. The company expects to report topline results in the first quarter of 2027.

The clinical study represents an important step in assessing whether the antimicrobial activity observed in laboratory testing can translate into clinical benefits for patients.

Kelvin Cooper, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer and Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Lakewood-Amedex Biotherapeutics, said the findings presented at IDWeek reinforce Nu-3's potential to address antimicrobial resistance.

He highlighted the candidate's broad-spectrum activity, rapid bactericidal effects and low potential for resistance development as characteristics that could differentiate it from existing antimicrobial approaches. The company intends to continue advancing Nu-3 toward a potential topical treatment option for patients with difficult-to-treat infections.
