Meftal advisory: Why has government issued a safety alert against painkiller?

DRESS (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms) syndrome caused by certain medications can result in severe allergic reactions.

Its symptoms include skin rash, fever, haematological abnormalities, internal organ involvement, which can manifest two to eight weeks after drug intake, and lymphadenopathy.

Meftal-Spas is commonly prescribed for a variety of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhoea, mild to moderate pain, inflammation, fever, and dental pain.

Healthcare professionals and patients are advised to be vigilant for signs of DRESS syndrome and other adverse drug reactions.

If such symptoms occur, they should be reported promptly to the national coordination centre of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) through various channels provided by the IPC.In addition to DRESS syndrome, Meftal-Spas has been associated with other side effects such as abdominal pain, indigestion, dry mouth, blurred vision, increased blood pressure, swelling, skin rash, and gastrointestinal issues like stomach ulcers and bleeding.

Prolonged use of the drug may also pose risks to fertility in women, kidney problems and cardiovascular events, especially in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions.

Meftal should not be consumed without a prescription

Doctors emphasise that while side effects are rare, they are known, and caution against the indiscriminate use of Meftal-Spas without a prescription.

The IPC's alert serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with the overuse of painkillers and the need for responsible medication practices.

Patients are encouraged to consult healthcare providers before starting or continuing treatment with Meftal-Spas, particularly if they have a history of gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, or renal issues.
